It’s one of the most common questions we get at the counter: “Which stone do I actually need?” Most people know what they’re building, like a driveway, a patio base, or a fix for a soggy corner of the yard. The hard part is matching the project to the right material.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the aggregates we carry and where each one works best.

Start With the Job, Not the Stone

Most aggregate projects need one of three things:

  • A solid base that packs down and holds weight
  • Drainage that lets water move through and away
  • A finished look for paths, fire pits, and decorative areas

Once you know which one your project needs, the choice gets much easier.

Road Gravel: The Workhorse
Road gravel is a mix of stone and finer material that packs down firmly. That makes it a dependable driveway base and a good foundation layer under other materials. If you’re building or rebuilding a driveway, this is usually where you start.

22A Dolomite: Compacts Tight, Finishes Clean
22A is a finer crushed stone that locks together when compacted. It’s a popular driveway topper and a go-to sub-base for patios, sheds, and walkways, anywhere you want a firm, level surface.

17A Dolomite: Bigger Stone, Better Drainage
17A is a larger stone with more space between pieces, so water moves through it easily. It’s often used in French drains and in spots that get heavier water flow.

6A Washed Stone: Clean Drainage Stone
Because 6A is washed, the fine particles that can clog drainage are removed. It’s a common choice around downspouts, in French drains, and in drainage beds where water needs a clear path.

Project Good Fits
