When homeowners stop by our Grand Haven yard to pick up soil, the first question is usually “what’s the difference?” We carry two soils: Compost Enhanced Topsoil and Garden Blend. Both are good products. Which one is right for you depends on what you’re growing and where.
The Quick Answer
Growing grass, trees, shrubs, or landscape beds? Start with Compost Enhanced Topsoil.
Building raised beds or a vegetable garden? Go with Garden Blend.
Compost Enhanced Topsoil: The All-Around Choice
Our topsoil is screened and blended with compost, so it’s easy to spread and gives plants a healthy start. It’s a versatile choice for:
- Lawn repairs, including patching thin or bare spots and filling low areas
- Flower beds and general landscape planting
- Trees and shrubs
- Vegetables planted in the ground
If you’re working on a large area or you’re not sure which soil to choose, topsoil is usually the right place to start.
Garden Blend: Richer Soil for Growing
Garden Blend is a richer soil made for gardens that need to produce. It’s a great fit for:
- Raised beds, where the plants rely entirely on the soil you add
- Vegetable gardens
- Strong root growth and vigorous blooms
If you’re filling a raised bed from scratch, Garden Blend gives your plants everything they need from day one.
Why It Matters on the Lakeshore
Many yards in Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and along the lakeshore sit on sandy soil. Sand drains quickly and doesn’t hold nutrients well, which is why lawns and gardens here often struggle without help. Adding a quality soil gives roots something to grow into and helps hold moisture between waterings.
Tip: When you’re adding soil over existing ground, work it into the top few inches instead of just layering it on top. That helps roots grow down instead of staying near the surface.
Fall Is a Great Time to Prep
You don’t have to wait for spring. Fall is a good time to repair thin lawn areas and get garden beds ready before the ground freezes. Your soil will have time to settle over the winter, so you’ll be ready to plant as soon as the weather turns.
How Much Soil Do I Need?
Measure your area and run the numbers through our Yardage Calculator. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide: How Much Material Do I Need?
Soil settles after it’s spread, especially in raised beds, so ordering a little extra is a good idea.
Need Sand Instead?
If you’re setting pavers or filling a sandbox, check out the sand options on our Sand & Soils page. We carry Fill Sand, Washed Sand, Mortar Sand, and silica-free Play Sand.
